Everyone who wants to borrow books and other media at our library must have a library card. Borrowing is free, but in order to provide the best service possible, we have rules that everyone is required to follow.
In order to obtain a library card, you will need to come to one of our libraries and show a valid photo ID. The library card is valid at the Main Library, Kastal Library, Torvalla Library, Lit Library and on the Library Bus.
When you receive a library card, you undertake to do the following:
- Return borrowed books and other media at the stated time
- Show your library card when borrowing
- Notify the library of any change of address
- Follow other rules and regulations governing borrowing at the library
Your library card is personal and you are responsible for any materials you borrow with the card. Because of this, never forget to suspend the card if you lose it.
You will also need a PIN code, which, in addition to enabling you to borrow, gives you access to the other library services.
If you haven’t used your library card at our libraries for five years, it will no longer be valid.
Processing of personal data
The library needs to collect and process your personal data so you can borrow books and reserve time on the computers in the library. Read more about how we process your personal data.
How long can I borrow?
Normally, you can borrow materials for four weeks (28 days).
- Books for which there is a queue (14 days)
- New books (14 days)
- Fast loan (7 days)
- Periodicals (7 days)
- DVD films, music CDs, LP records and music DVDs (7 days)
If you keep what you’ve borrowed beyond the due date, you will be required to pay a fee according to a separate schedule of fees. The same thing applies if the material you borrow gets damaged or lost.
How many items can I borrow?
There is no limit to how much you are allowed to borrow, but there are a few exceptions.
You may have no more than:
- 10 disks borrowed on your library card
- 5 films borrowed on your library card
- 1 fast loan item borrowed on your library card
E-books and e-audio books are subject to special rules. You can borrow no more than two e-books or e-audio books during a seven-day period.
Books in the Reference section are not allowed to be borrowed, but are instead meant to be used on-site in the library. These books are marked with a red dot on their back and have red labels. Books printed before 1900 are also not allowed to be borrowed.
You can re-borrow books in our catalogue, extending the due date.
Up to four extensions are allowed.
Fast loan items cannot be re-borrowed
Music-CDs, LPs and DVD films can be re-borrowed only once.
Material that has been reserved by another borrower cannot be re-borrowed.
If you want to extend an interlibrary loan, you need to contact the library.
What do I do if the library does not have what I’m looking for?
We purchase a good deal of material as a result of what is in demand, and we are happy to receive suggestions about purchases. You can tell us about books, newspapers, periodicals, music CDs, DVD films or anything else you think we should have at the library. Submit suggested purchases

In the case of older materials that cannot be purchases, we can often borrow these from some other library by what we call interlibrary loans.
You can reserve almost all of our books and other media, both those that are currently borrowed and those on the shelves. Reference books and fast loans, however, cannot be reserved.
The personnel set aside reserved material at different times during the day. Note, however, that the book you want may be borrowed before we have had a chance to set it aside for you. You then need to reserve the book for the next time it is returned.
Will I then get a message from the library when the book has come in?
Yes, you will get a message by mail, e-mail or SMS when your title has been returned to the library. In order for this to work, your e-mail address must be entered in our borrower register. Contact the personnel when you wish to update your information, and we will be glad to help you.
You will have a week from the time when the message was sent to pick up the material you requested. After that, the book will go to the next person in the queue. If there is no queue, the book will be returned to its place on the shelf.
Loss of the right to borrow
If you fail to follow the rules for borrowing, you can lose your right to borrow. If you have a debt to the library of more than 100kr, your library card will be suspended until the debt has been paid.
